What is the purpose of life? It is to become happy. Whatever country or society people live in, they all have the same deep desire: to become happy.

Yet, there are few ideals as difficult to grasp as that of happiness. In our daily life we …constantly experience happiness and unhappiness, but we are still quite ignorant as to what happiness really is.A young friend of mine once spent a long time trying to work out what happiness was, particularly happiness for women. When she first thought about happiness she saw it as a matter of becoming financially secure or getting married. (The view in Japanese society then was that happiness for a woman was only to be found in marriage.) But looking at friends who were married, she realized that marriage didn’t necessarily guarantee happiness.

She saw couples who had been passionately in love suffering from discord soon after their wedding. She saw women who had married men with money or status but who fought constantly with their husbands.

Gradually, she realized that the secret of happiness lay in building a strong inner self that no trial or hardship could ruin. She saw that happiness for anyone - man or woman - does not come simply from having a formal education, from wealth or from marriage. It begins with having the strength to confront and conquer one’s own weaknesses. Only then does it become possible to lead a truly happy life and enjoy a successful marriage.

She finally told me, “Now I can say with confidence that happiness doesn’t exist in the past or in the future. It only exists within our state of life right now, here in the present, as we face the challenges of daily life.”

I agree entirely. You yourself know best whether you are feeling joy or struggling with suffering. These things are not known to other people. Even a man who has great wealth, social recognition and many awards may still be shadowed by indescribable suffering deep in his heart. On the other hand, an elderly woman who is not fortunate financially, leading a simple life alone, may feel the sun of joy and happiness rising in her heart each day.

Happiness is not a life without problems, but rather the strength to overcome the problems that come our way. There is no such thing as a problem-free life; difficulties are unavoidable. But how we experience and react to our problems depends on us. Buddhism teaches that we are each responsible for our own happiness or unhappiness. Our vitality - the amount of energy or “life-force” we have - is in fact the single most important factor in determining whether or not we are happy.

True happiness is to be found within, in the state of our hearts. It does not exist on the far side of some distant mountains. It is within you, yourself. However much you try, you can never run away from yourself. And if you are weak, suffering will follow you wherever you go. You will never find happiness if you don’t challenge your weaknesses and change yourself from within.

Happiness is to be found in the dynamism and energy of your own life as you struggle to overcome one obstacle after another. This is why I believe that a person who is active and free from fear is truly happy.

The challenges we face in life can be compared to a tall mountain, rising before a mountain climber. For someone who has not trained properly, whose muscles and reflexes are weak and slow, every inch of the climb will be filled with terror and pain. The exact same climb, however, will be a thrilling journey for someone who is prepared, whose legs and arms have been strengthened by constant training. With each step forward and up, beautiful new views will come into sight.

My teacher used to talk about two kinds of happiness - “relative” and “absolute” happiness. Relative happiness is happiness that depends on things outside ourselves: friends and family, surroundings, the size of our home or family income.

This is what we feel when a desire is fulfilled, or something we have longed for is obtained. While the happiness such things bring us is certainly real, the fact is that none of this lasts forever. Things change. People change. This kind of happiness shatters easily when external conditions alter.

Relative happiness is also based on comparison with others. We may feel this kind of happiness at having a newer or bigger home than the neighbors. But that feeling turns to misery the moment they start making new additions to theirs!

Absolute happiness, on the other hand, is something we must find within. It means establishing a state of life in which we are never defeated by trials and where just being alive is a source of great joy. This persists no matter what we might be lacking, or what might happen around us. A deep sense of joy is something which can only exist in the innermost reaches of our life, and which cannot be destroyed by any external forces. It is eternal and inexhaustible.

This kind of satisfaction is to be found in consistent and repeated effort, so that we can say, “Today, again, I did my very best. Today, again, I have no regrets. Today, again, I won.” The accumulated result of such efforts is a life of great victory.

What we should compare is not ourselves against others. We should compare who we are today against who we were yesterday, who we are today against who we will be tomorrow. While this may seem simple and obvious, true happiness is found in a life of constant advancement. And the same worries that could have made us miserable can actually be a source of growth when we approach them with courage and wisdom.

Such a person lives each day with a broad and embracing spirit.
A person with a strong will is happy.
Such a person can confidently enjoy life, never defeated by suffering.
A person with a profound spirit is happy.
Such a person can savor life’s depths
while creating meaning and value that will last for eternity.
A person with a pure mind is happy.
Such a person is always surrounded by refreshing breezes of joy.

Produzieren, wo der Pfeffer wächst

Die Mädchen tuscheln und lachen, sie sind vielleicht sechs, sieben Jahre alt. Dann geben sie sich einen Ruck: Sie fassen die Haare der deutschen Besucherin an. Blonde Haare, das haben sie noch nie gesehen.

Ha Tinh sind Ausländer Exoten. Die Stadt liegt in der gleichnamigen Provinz in der Mitte des Landes, die Region ist eine der ärmsten in Vietnam. Straßenkinder umstreunen mobile Garküchen, Büffel trotten über die Straße, vor den Toren der Stadt knattern Mopeds über unbefestigte Wege und wirbeln roten Staub auf.

Doch der Provinz Ha Tinh steht ein gigantischer Boom bevor. Denn unter dem Boden ruht ein Schatz: rund eine Milliarde Tonnen Eisenerz.

Die Region soll das größte Eisenerzabbaugebiet Südostasiens werden. Der taiwanische Stahlriese Formosa erschließt das Gebiet und siedelt Bewohner zahlreicher Dörfer um. “Es ist die Industriezone der Zukunft”, sagt Nguyen Duc Thanh. Er baut für Siemens  ein Ausbildungsprojekt an einer Berufsschule in Ha Tinh auf.

Siemens Kooperation in Ha Tinh mit der

Deutsch Vietnamesiche Berufsschule

Ausgangslage:

Die Stadt Hà Tinh wird sich in den nächsten Jahren zu einem Industriezentrum entwickeln, da eine Erzverarbeitungsanlage gebaut wird. Der Aufbau der Fabrik wird Zulieferer anziehen und zu einer generellen Zunahme industrieller Aktivität in der Umgebung führen.

In einem Kooperationsvorhaben zwischen DED, GTZ und KfW werden die Lehrer einer Berufsschule in Hà Tinh, sowie zehn weiterer Berufsschulen im Land weitergebildet. Des Weiteren werden die Schulen mit Material ausgestattet und die Lehrer darin geschult, ihre Studenten an den Maschinen zu trainieren.

Interesse von Siemens:
Siemens möchte die Berufsschule in Hà Tinh zu einem Siemensstützpunkt ausbauen. Die Lehrer der Berufsschule sollen in Kooperation mit einer Hochschule in Ho Chi Minh Stadt in europäischen Standards und an Siemensprodukten qualifiziert werden.  Dazu wird der Berufsschule Lern-, Maschinen- und Programmiersoftware zur Verfügung gestellt. Auch Maschinen zur Ausbildung wie etwa Schaltungsprogrammierbare Steuerungen SPS werden ergänzend zum von der KfW gelierten Material übergeben. Dadurch erhalten zukünftig auch die Berufsschüler eine sehr hochwertige Ausbildung. Ihre guten Fachkenntnisse und ihr Anwendungswissen zu Siemensprodukten werden es Siemens erleichtern, eigene Produkte an zukünftige Arbeitgeber der Absolventen zu vertreiben.

Interesse der Berufsschule:
Die Berufsschule profitiert von einer höheren Qualifizierung der Lehrer und den zusätzlichen Materialien. Die bessere Ausbildung der Studenten wird die Berufsschule zu einem gefragten Partner von Unternehmen machen. Schließlich profitiert auch die Wirtschaft von kompetenteren Mitarbeitern und einer gesteigerten Wettbewerbsfähigkeit.

Interesse des DED:
Der DED kooperiert mit der lokalen Wirtschaft, um soziale und ökologische Aspekte in Unternehmensstrategien zu verankern. Mit unseren Mitteln für Entwicklungspartnerschaften mit der Wirtschaft/PPP ko-finanzieren wir herausragende Projekte zu gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung von Unternehmen. Darunter verstehen wir, dass sich Unternehmen ergänzend zu ihrem Kerngeschäft sichtbar für soziale und ökologische Belange im Unternehmen und im Unternehmensumfeld engagieren.
Bezüglich eines Projekts mit Siemens und der Berufsschule bieten sich Themen wie Energiesparen, Arbeitssicherheit, Erneuerbare Energien, Umweltschutz an.

Mögliche CSR-Maßnahmen als Ergänzung zum Aufbau des Siemenszentrums wären zum Beispiel:
• Ausstattung von öffentlichen Gebäuden mit Solaranlagen
• Anschluss eines Dorfes an die öffentliche Wasserversorgung
• Durchführung eines wissenschaftlichen Wettbewerbs mit Schülern einer weiterführenden Schule
• Hygieneschulung für Mitarbeiter eines Krankenhauses

We have a needs and effects oriented approach, helping children and village communities in South East Asia in the areas of emergency, poverty and economic support.

Dear beloved friends,

now i present you a video about our project visit in Pa Nor village in Luang Prabang Province, Laos P.D.R. We`ve already started to support our village in building a school and also we support them to get new access points for clean water; decreased waiting time at taps; drinking water and toilet facilities in the village. We set off to our village on
26/07/2010 and had some discussions with the village leaders. After that we visited the projects and could have a look at what they’ve done since our last visit. The school is nearly built and the water system is already installed. Now they build a big water reservoir in the middle of the village. Our project runs succsessfully and the village is building up its own future. Pann and I are also happy to see what only a short support can do for the families in this village. With our organisation Save the Children`s Souls Pann and I are looking forward to support other villages in this area, too. Please, my friends, help us to find donors willing to support our projects, thank you all so much.

Das Glück, oder glücklich sein… das ist die Frage die ich mir seit Beginn meiner Reise, meiner Reise zu mir selbst zu meiner Bestimmung zu meinem sein, beschäftigt. was ist glücklich sein, wie fühlt es sich an wenn man glücklich ist, was macht das totale Glück aus und wie erreicht man es?

Heute bin ich sehr aufgewühlt, ausgelaugt, müde und leer, vor meinem Haus in meinem Garten wird gerade eine Toilettenpapierfabrik gebaut, es wird gehämmert, gesägt, gemauert und gearbeitet den ganzen Tag. An dem Ort an dem ich mich zurückziehe um herunter zu kommen, herunter von den Eindrücken die mich doch noch von Zeit zu Zeit überwältigen, um herunter zu kommen von der Arbeit die bei diesen Temperaturen manchmal mörderisch ist. Mein Haus ist mein Ruhepol, ein Ruhepol um das ich zu finden, um entspannt die Welt zu genießen, mich selbst zu verstehen und meinen Weg zu gehen.

Nun sitze ich halt in einem nha nhi (Gästehaus) bis ich absehen kann wie es weiter geht. Ich fühle mich gerade wie aus meiner Umlaufbahn geschossen, ohne anlaufpunkt der ruhe Sicherheit und des zuhause seins. Ich habe kein Geld mehr mal in den Urlaub zu fahren oder zu entspannen, keine Zeit mich zurück zu ziehen, den Einklang mit mir selbst bei einer Meditation zu erfahren, nichts dergleichen.

Aber ich weiß was ich habe was das alles verblassen lässt, ich habe mich, ich habe meinen Ruhepunkt, mein Gleichgewicht, ich habe das Licht in mir zudem ich mich zurückziehen kann. Ich habe das Glück gesucht und gefunden, das Glück für mich ist eine Vereinigung mit mir und Gott, die Ruhe und die kraft, dass Gefühl des Glücks… Dies sind die Dinge die ich immer gesucht habe, nur wo habe ich sie gesucht, draußen um mich herum, in den Dingen die passierten, in dem was mir das Leben jeden Tag geboten hat. Doch ich kann jetzt in dieser Situation, weit weg von meinem eigentlichen zuhause sagen, dass ich das Glück gefunden habe. Ich habe eingesehen dass ich falsch lag, ich habe eingesehen das es für mich nicht der richtige Weg ist nach dem Glück des Geschehens zu suchen, so nenne ich es mal, ich habe verstanden dass das wirkliche Glück nicht von außen kommen kann, sondern von innen.

Ich habe für mich eingesehen dass nur ich selbst mich glücklich machen kann, ich bin es und nicht die Dinge die passieren. Ich habe für mich entdeckt dass ich den halt, den meine Seele brauch, die Hoffnung, die Zuversicht und die Freude aus meinem inneren kommt. Es ist meine Sichtweise die mir früher die Welt und mein Glück vernebelt hatte. Doch die Sicht in mich hinein, hat mir gezeigt was wahres Glück ist, hat mir gezeigt wie falsch ich lag. Denn nun kommt das Glück aus mir heraus, aus meinem inneren, aus meiner Mitte, aus meinem tiefen vertrauen auf die Wahrheit und mich selbst, auf ein tiefes vertrauen hin zu Gott. Dies gibt mir die Gelassenheit meine Umgebung in einem anderen Licht zu sehen und damit mich selber. Sie gibt mir die Möglichkeit die Welt nicht ständig nach Glück und Freude absuchen zu müssen, denn meine Betrachtung der Welt kommt aus meinem inneren und ist daher von Freude und Glück geprägt. Sie ist der Ausdruck meiner selbst, die mich erkennen lässt das wahres Glück in den Herzen der Menschen liegt.

Das wahres Glück deine Welt Bund und schön macht, mit der Sicherheit das alles was passiert zu deinem guten ist, sei es Krankheit, Schmerz, oder Dinge des Lebens die dir zusetzen. Alles hat mich gelehrt das mein ich, meine Seele der Punkt ist der mich glücklich macht. Das hören und gestalten der Welt, mein Glück in mir und dem tiefen Respekt vor dem Glück der anderen Menschen… Ich habe gelernt das Glück wie wir es kennen für mich nicht existiert, ich habe gelernt das der weg wie Glück zu erfahren ist, das Glück in sich selbst zu suchen.

Glück ist daher aus meiner Sicht der Einklang mit mir selbst und der Welt, die wiederum durch eine Sicht der Liebe geprägt ist.

Ich bin glücklich und erfahre das Glück jeden Tag, der Einklang mit mir selbst, die neue Sichtweise und mein Vertrauen auf Gott, dies ist mein weg zu meinem persönlichen glücklich sein.

Gebrüder Grimm
Die “Gebrüder” bestanden aus Jacob (1785-1863) und Wilhelm (1786-1859). Als Literaturwissenschaftler sind sie die Begründer der deutschen Philologie.

“Hans im Glück” ist ein faszinierend vielschichtiges Stück Kurzprosa, das bei näherer Betrachtung viele Facetten zeigt. Die Handlung des Märchens kreist um die Hauptperson, dessen Charakter dabei immer deutlicher wird.

Auf den ersten Blick ist Hans - finanziell gesehen - ein Vollidiot. Er verspielt seinen hart erarbeiteten, wertvollen Lohn. Am Schluss bleibt ihm nichts von sieben Jahren harter Arbeit. Er tauscht ein Ding gegen das andere, und dabei bekommt er immer weniger Gegenwert. Man muss an die alte Börsenweisheit denken: Hin und her - Taschen leer.

Hans ist ein unerschütterlicher Optimist: Immer wieder setzt er seine Hoffnung auf andere Dinge, deren Vorzüge seine Geschäftspartner ihm rosig ausmalen. Er projiziert seine Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben immer wieder auf andere Objekte. Jede seiner Erwerbungen hat jedoch neben ihren Vorzügen auch einen Pferdefuß, ist mit Gefahren oder Beschwernis gekoppelt. Deshalb ist er jedesmal froh, das Ding wieder los zu sein.

Hans erkennt nicht, dass seine Tauschpartner allesamt Gauner sind, die nur auf ihren Vorteil aus sind, und ihn, den Naiven, übertölpeln. Und statt dass er sich wenigstens im Nachhinein über seinen Handel ärgert, freut er sich jedesmal. Getreu der Maxime des Positiven Denkens sieht er in allem, was geschieht, nur das Gute. Selbst wenn er dem Scherenschleifer gegenüber die Kette seiner Tauschgeschäfte rekapituliert, wird ihm der Wertverlust nicht klar. Positiv in die Vergangenheit und in die Zukunft sehend, lernt Hans nicht aus seinen Erfahrungen, und am Schluss bleibt ihm nichts von seinem Vermögen.

Aller objektiven Missgeschicke zum Trotz ist Hans aber im Märchen immer glücklich. Durch sein positives Denken verwandelt sich objektiv Schlimmes in subjektives Wohlbefinden. Jeden Fehler deutet Hans in einen Erfolg um. Er erscheint so als der Prototyp des Lebemannes, der nie schlechte Laune hat oder mit seinem Geschick hadert. Er lebt in den Tag hinein, läuft wechselnden Verlockungen nach, probiert alles aus, was ihm begegnet. Ökonomisch gesehen, orientiert er sich nicht am Tauschwert der Dinge, sondern an ihrem Gebrauchswert, daran, was ihm ein Ding nützen könnte. Psychologisch, aus der Sichtweise von Erich Fromm gesehen, lebt Hans in der Existenzweise des Seins, nicht des Habens.

Am Schluss erkennt Hans, dass all sein Besitz ihn beschwert hat, dass jedes Ding seinem Fortkommen, seiner Freiheit im Weg war. Geld und Besitz machen nicht glücklich, sondern die Art, wie man die Welt sieht. Die Geschichte seines Heimkommen, seiner persönlichen Odyssee ist damit auch die Geschichte zunehmender Erkenntnis. Am Schluss, wo Hans gar nichts mehr besitzt als sich selbst, ist er am glücklichsten. Mit dieser asketischen Einsicht schließt die Geschichte.

Taken minutes of the first meeting concerning the work with Ha Tinh’s street children

today’s purpose:

  - general overview about the situation of street children living in Ha Tinh
  - collecting ideas on what to do to help them
  - assigning tasks that are first to be done

4:10 p.m.: opening

– brief introduction given by Chris
– today our intention is to collect ideas; which kind of work is possible?
– Cooperation with DOLISA (Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs)
– Chris has already gained experience in working with street children, during his time in Idonesia
– it’s important to start our work immediately because stays in Ha Tinh only 6 more months
– our aim: to make a conception on how to work with the street children here, this conception is supposed to be put into action even without Chris’ presence in Ha Tinh
– we’re depending on voluntarily work to make sure the started work will be continued even without Chris
– presentation of today’s aim (see above)

4:25 p.m.: Anh Dung (representative of DOLISA, Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs )
–  talks about the present situation of street children in Ha Tinh
–  during day and night the children are begging for money, there’s a certain place near the bus station where they have     to hand it to a certain woman
→ yet we don’t know: why do they behave like that and what’s going on with that 
     money?
→ but if we want to change anything at all it’s not only necessary to work with the
     children, we have to cooperate with that woman, too (because she depends on the  
     children’s income, if we cause trouble with her it will be to our disadvantage
–   start-up idea: working with the children by talking to them, playing with them etc.
→ this way we won’t change their situation but step by step we will understand more
     about it

– yet there is already some cooperation with mass organisations (Women’s union) and some European organisation (in Ky Anh)

– yet we have to decide how to continue our work: we could use the conception drafted by DOLISA and develop it further

The problem of street children is one of the most pressing social problems
in Vietnam. The sight of children selling chewing gum in restaurants or shining
shoes in street corners has become familiar. People sometimes call them roaming
kids or “dust of life.” Although the problem is well known, the dynamic
mechanism that prompts these children to drop out of school and go selling in
the street is yet to be analyzed deeply or comprehensively. Such causes as dire
poverty and parents’ divorce may be common to the street children problem in
all developing countries, but other causes may be that Ha Tinh experiencing an enormous social and economic transformation.

Children end up on the street for a variety of reasons. For some, the
street is an escape from broken families or domestic violence. For others, street
life is a means of supplementing family income, passing time, and even having
fun. In addition, the breakdown of traditional family values, educational zeal,
and community structure leaves a large number of children without necessary
